I recently became acquainted with Antonella Eye Porcelluzzi’s work and, frankly, I’m kind of blown away. She is obviously a prolific artist, creating in various mediums and styles. And I suspect she is an instigator of the most positive kind – collaborating with an extensive group of other like-minded souls. To give an idea of her work let’s take a look at a couple recent releases from March 2022…
“winter talisman” by Philippe Neau and Antonella includes two longer-form pieces of music. The first (“part I”) gives the impression of nature sounds and field recordings stretched and manipulated and mixed with drones and other noises into an exotic soundscape. This track includes Antonella reading yoga guru Yogananda; at times the recitations are subsumed by the sounds or tampered with, but at other times the nature of Antonella’s delivery makes it feel like a guided meditation. Be sure to stick around for the intriguing “part II” which seems to be an ambient dub version of “part I.”
“PLAN Z” by Terbeschikkingstelling and AEP (AEP Lab) is something very different. The music features lo-fi, No Wave, punk, cut-up, and free jazz influences. It’s often built around more traditional rock instrumentation, while not being traditional sounding at all. The word “chaos” appears on the cover art, so that’s a clue.
The stated central theme is “when friends meet after longtime and reciprocally show their photos of family, boat and lifestyle.” That paints a picture of what could be a somewhat superficial “catching up” with an old friend, but the lyrics suggest that this might not be a straightforward conversation. The narrator may be sharing a little too much disquieting personal information about her husband. Are the children being discussed her offspring or her art? And that boat may not even be on the water; it seems to be a combination of her daily physical surroundings and personal vision. Our narrator seems to express complete comfort with who she is and where she’s at on the closing track “LIFESTYLEZ.” [Easter egg heads-up to Psychedelic Furs fans in the audience.]
As noted earlier, these are just two samples of AEP’s work. I’ve “dipped in” to several other releases and note there are lots of musical styles and interesting ideas spread throughout her discography. There are two AEP labels (one under Antonella’s name and a newer AEP Lab page) with a ton of music. Dive in.
