Noise Eating Monsters

“Voracious”

Let me cut to the chase – these guys are great. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

OK, here’s a little more. This is an improvising trio consisting of Alex Ward (electric guitar), Alex Thomas (drums) and not an Alex but an excellent Tim Hill (baritone sax). I was immediately won over by the first track “Mangle,” which is little tornado of wild jazz. It starts with some slower interplay among the three musicians but spins up very quickly into a whirlwind (or maybe a whirl wound – see track three) of sound. The frantic playing continues for most of the duration of the song, then fairly quickly winds down. The free jazz vibe continues throughout the album.

While I was pulled in by the freewheeling jazz, the more time I spent with this music, the more genre elements I heard thrown in…psychedelic, prog, punk, metal, and maybe even a little motor city rock. There’s an awful lot of good stuff here to feed your ears. If you’re feeling voracious, gobble this one up.
