I took a little hiatus in late 2022, but the Colematics syndicate clearly did not. In fact, Enghis von Sharklor sent me links to just some of the music they released in the second half of the year. And that “just some” was ten in number, and I’m sure there’s plenty more out there to be found. In any case, I felt it my duty to listen to all ten and, in doing so, was inspired to put my thoughts in poem form. And so, without further ado, I give you “The Rime of Enghis von Sharklor.”
[Note: Each release being described is numbered, with links at the bottom of the page.]
1
Experiment is the key word on Foul Decay
Blips and squiggles, eagleclaw ghosts without words
1b stands out with its electronic birds
It all gives the impression of live improv play
2
The Crypt is absolutely packed thick
With sci-fi noises and rackety sound
Movie and media samples abound
Finding the meaning will be the trick
3
The Cave Racks are built by dual execution
Enghis von S brings clamor that disturbs
Antonella invokes well-chosen verbs
And thanks Nina Hagen for your contribution
4
A visit to the planet of Gemini-L-O
Inspired by, a tribute to, and sampled tapes
Of the many forms of the Planet of the Apes
Perhaps Broken Off Monkey Arm if you’re in the know
5
Stasis is from a new team Colematics employs
Headphone static that feels like a rain forest domain
Creates a sense of balance in your body and brain
Depending on your tolerance for straight harsh noise
6
Imagine noise is turned into liquid
Sloshing around tanks on an alien ship
No destination, it’s the noise that’s the trip
Foul Decay 2 will have you addicted
7
Collaboration that questions our existence
Layers of samples and noises and distortion
Like a distressed game suffering some misfortune
Give into the noise not your futile resistance
8
Gemini sets the scene with an orchestral display
A cinematic score with impressions dramatic
Castle in Ruins proposes titles thematic
Belying the frolicking synthesizer at play
9
A Colematics Trauma Zombie collaboration
Dramatic noises do create a commotion
Horror war or crime styles to fit your emotion
Both a blending of clatter and a confrontation
10
The foul decay trilogy is finally finished
A concluding noise symphony or an entre
Allegro adagio largo andante
Colematics admiration is never diminished
