Another Reddit discovery. This artist said “I recorded and performed noise from 1997 – 2003. I don’t remember why I stopped…” To which I say, there’s nothing wrong with an occasional sabbatical, but I’m glad BRXTNLE came back, and let us know.
“Unmind” is full of dark soundscapes that are all menacing to some degree. On opening track “Four Nights” you’ll hear strong winds and nature getting stirred up including, possibly, wolves. I wouldn’t go out there if I was you. Listening to “Organic Personality Change” I can only describe the base sound as staticky water, with the occasional sound of a beast underneath that starts rolling in like waves.
You’ll visit some scary locations too, like a graveyard (on “Here Lies the Individual”), a haunted amusement park (on “Someone Thought This Was a Good Idea”), and a cavernous warehouse in “Spatial Atrocity” featuring screaming off in the distance. Welcome to hell, I guess?
The longer closing track “This Is What We Mean by Strangers” starts with metallic sound bath bowls and a distorted and processed male voice. As the track move on, other noises and overlapping voices enter the mix. While you’ll probably have trouble deciphering everything, you’ll pick up enough to detect a discussion between a therapist and patient, and also one between a caring father and his child. The overlapping sounds and voices result in a nicely unsettling listen.
BRXTNLE has posted both old (or maybe we’ll call it “Era 1”) and new experimental music on his Bandcamp page, so there’s lots to XPLR. Just be careful out there; you never know what frightening sound you might encounter.
