“INTERGALACTIC MATRIARCHY” by Jon Shuemaker

You will travel far during the 19+ minute journey that is “Intergalactic Matriarchy.” Everything here is played by Jon Shuemaker and it’s quite an impressive array of sounds. The music constantly shapeshifts as various (sometimes unexpected) elements complement each other. There’s lots of fuzzed guitar appearing throughout, but the styles vary from prog to hard rock to punk to space jam. The distortion sometimes gives way to clean guitar or piano, and is mixed with all kinds of percussion from ominous slow gongs to rapid fire beats. Also dropping in at various times are pleasant electronics, strings, and even some acoustic guitar that subtly suggests African pop toward the end. At any moment the music may be playful, dramatic, psychedelic or atmospheric. Reading this it may make it sound like it’s an unholy mess, or just a vehicle for Shuemaker to show off his wide variety of playing skills – far from it. This music flows so naturally you’ll have floated along and, before you know it, and will reach an end where you may find you want to immediately repeat the trip.
